Charlie has been farming Rhiwbren Fawr, near Aberaeron, with his family since the early 1970’s.
Charlie milks an organic herd of 74 cows, made up of Shorthorns, Meuse Rhine Issel and Montbeliarde cows on their 150 acre farm.
Rhiwbren Fawr went organic back in the late 1990’s and joined Calon Wen in 2000.
“I’ve always wanted to go organic and when some of my neighbours’ farms became available that gave us enough land to convert. It’s the best thing I ever did. Being organic really suits the land and I really enjoy it as a way of farming.”
The cows spend as much time in the field as possible and if its mild they have been know to graze into November. When it gets too wet they come into the shed and they are fed silage through the winter. Once it dries up in the Spring they can head back out to the fields to graze grass again.
