Patrick Holden was brought up in London. When he was five he visited a dairy farm near Epping and decided he wanted to milk cows.
Patrick & his family farm 135-acres at Bwlchwernen Fawr near the Ceredigion coast, although Patrick has been at the farm since the early 70’s, originally as a member of a commune, then as tenant and now owner. The farm is the longest standing registered organic dairy farm in Wales, certified organic since 1973.
Patrick has 65 milking Ayrshire cows, small by modern standards but Patrick feels this is the maximum the farm can support without relying heavily on bought-in feed. In the early 80s, Patrick became increasingly involved with the Soil Association – where he became Director.
Patrick now runs the farm with his wife, Becky, and their 4 younger boys – William, Ben, Harry and James, while son Sam and his wife Rachel have been making Hafod Organic Cheese since 2007. www.hafodcheese.co.uk
